I have had the privilege to hunt all over North America. I recently had the opportunity to hunt with Beaver Trap Outfitters. The owner, Ross Adney, was my guide assisted by guides Mike and Phil. These three men really know what they are doing. Their ability to spot game is unparalleled. Their ability to put their hunter in an advantageous position for the shot was amazing. The guided me to one of the toughest trophies in the American west, a mature and beautiful mule deer. I am 84 years of age and they were patient with an old man who tried his best to keep up. I want to thank Ross, Mike, and Phil for their efforts on my behalf. I am forever ( I don't know how long that will be!) in their debt. Thank you.
Fall 2024 - Elk Hunt Area 39
First of all, Ross worked with me to design a rifle elk hunt for my situation. I’m a 55 year old disabled veteran and a Wyoming resident, which required some flexibility because the elk draw for residents is random with no preference points. Ross put me up in the High Country Lodge (great place BTW!) so I could sleep in a bed each night. Ross prepared great meals at his camper then brought it over to the lodge, his breakfast burritos are awesome! Additionally, the “Elk Wildfire” was east of Elk Hunt Area 39 which prompted the Forest Service to close one of the main access roads to 39. So we had a discussion about moving the trip to the following year, or going forward with the hunt which would require more hiking. I should mention that this style of hunting is driving by truck or ATV to glassing spots, then when you spot a good bull you hike to him. Note that this is public land hunting, so you’ll see other hunters, but less so once you start hiking! Ross (he was also my guide) uses high quality optics and he has tracked ATVs to ensure you can keep hunting in the snow. My goal was to harvest a 6x6 bull and this was achieved! We had to hike 4-miles one way to get him from 8000 to 9000 feet. I knew this was about my limit, but Ross encouraged me to go for it! Definitely get in the best shape you can, use a weighted pack and hike (at elevation if possible) to prepare. And get high quality boots! The Bighorn Mountains have lots of open spaces, so be ready to shoot at long distances - this includes practice and a rifle/scope capable to 500 yards. My bull was shot at 537 yards with a 7PRC and 3-15x44 Leupold, which was the longest shot of my life. But I’m not going to lie - it took multiple shots! We couldn’t get closer because we ran out of cover and there was a herd of cows/calves between us. Did I mention practice with your rifle?! - I shoot once a week for the three months before hunting season so I was confident, but admittedly I don’t like to shoot past 500 yards when hunting. Ross is committed to a successful hunt. I lost a day during my hunt due to weather, but Ross was going to add a day to my hunt to compensate - this is unheard of in my experience! He also brought in another one of his guides to help. This turned out to be unnecessary because I got my bull on day 4, but it was comforting to know there was a day 6 option. Ross really knows the areas he hunts, especially considering he hunts mountain lions in the winter and spring bear - he’s not just a “fall” outfitter. I’m definitely going to book another hunt with Beaver Trap Outfitters!!!

I called Ross and explained some limitations I have and that I wanted my son to come along. Ross was awesome he worked extremely hard and used his vast knowledge of the area and knowledge of lions to put me on a good track. I knew I had one shot at a chase. His awesome dogs treed the Tom and my top bucket list hunt was successful . The total experience was amazing, his knowledge and stories of the area and his dogs are all part of the great adventure. I’ve DIY OTC elk hunted for 12 years and always said I’d make the most out of any premium once in a lifetime type tag, if I were lucky enough to draw one. So when I drew my area 38-9 tag on a random it was time to start making phone calls. Ultimately I went with BeaverTrap because it was public land and the options to hunt more ground and more days were seemingly endless, not to mention I couldn’t find a bad review no matter where I turned. I was told do my part as the hunter and they’d do all they could to put me on some bulls. 14 miles in on day 1 I arrowed my biggest bull to date. Can’t say enough good things about all the guides and the camp is top notch! These boys all do a great job getting hunters on bulls and it seemed everyone in camp had multiple solid opportunities on bulls. Great experience on my first guided Elk hunt. Thanks Ross!!

I hunted for whitetail with Beaver Trap Outfitters in November of 2021. Having never hunted whitetails (there are none in CA), Ross was an invaluable source of information. We made a couple unsuccessful stalks but on the third day, it all came together. Ross guided down a ditch & we were about 90 yards away when I got my buck. Hunted this fall 2021 with Beaver Trap Outfitters. 20” of snow fell in the high country 2 days before we started our elk hunt. My buddy and I had a 2 on 1 hunt with Ross a guide and owner of the business. But he knew where the elk were at after the storm. I got an awesome bull opening morning. My buddy shot a dandy bull a couple days later. Eight years to draw this tag, our best decision was to hire Beaver Trap. Wonderful time and good fellowship in camp.

Beavertrap was my first outfitter experience and they did not disappoint! I’ve elk hunted on my own for 13 years in Colorado, but knew when I drew my 38-9 tag that I wanted to make the most of it. Ross and his Dad run a top notch camp and all their guides are very knowledgeable. Seemed every hunter in camp was getting multiple opportunities on Bulls.
